Frequently Asked Questions
Can I substitute other courses for the prerequisite PTHA 1342 Elementary Statistics or the core course PSYC 2314?
The quick answer to this is no. Many students try to substitute Algebra for Elementary Statistics or General Psychology for Lifespan Development. These other courses do not cover the specific content that is needed for the PTA program.
How long before my prerequisites expire?
The only courses that have an “expiration” for the program are BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402. These courses must have been taken in the last 7 years to be considered current. All other prerequisite and core courses for the program do not have an expiration.
How much time is recommended for studying the PTA content?
Students in the PTA program can expect to spend 12-18 hours per week for study time, in addition to class/lab times.
What is the class schedule like?
First Semester of the Program: 3 days a week
Second Semester of the Program: 4 days a week
Third and Fourth Semesters: Full Time
Is there any equipment/materials that I will need for the program?
Yes, you will have the opportunity to purchase from the campus bookstore on orientation day and anytime once accepted into the program.
You will need the following:
-
PTA Kit
-
Grey scrubs with NC PTA emblem
-
Books
Is it mandatory that I attend an information session?
Yes, an information session is mandatory, but the program offers multiple information sessions, both in person and virtually. Remember the date that you attended the information session, so that you can answer this question on the application.
How do I get my observation hours?
Call a local outpatient physical therapy facility and ask if you can do observation hours at their facility. These sites can easily be found through a search on the internet. Inpatient observation hours can be obtained from the following types of places: skilled nursing facilities, home health, hospitals, long term acute care facilities. If you are having difficulty with finding a site, contact the program director.
What is the difference in outpatient and inpatient observation hours?
Outpatient clinics are those clinics in which the patient does not have an overnight stay. Inpatient facilities are those in which the patient stays overnight and may include home health, rehab, skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and hospitals. If you are struggling to find observation opportunities, email the PTA Program Director for a listing in your area.
If I have further questions, what is the best way to get a hold of someone in the program?
The best way to communicate with the PTA program faculty is via Health Professions Contact Form.
